As we all know, a room makeover can drastically change the look of any space. It doesn’t require a high investment. You can even reutilise some of your existing furniture like in this living room makeover. With clever thinking and a good sense of space planning, any room can be converted into a different and improved one.
In this particular case, our client wanted to redesign her living room to achieve a cosier and more stylish look.
She was open to suggestions and she wanted fresh ideas and concepts from us. The style she had in mind was a neutral, calm minimal look. However, she had some particular requirement. She wanted to maintain the bookshelves and integrate them into the new design.
The bookshelves were quite big and they were a statement by themselves. At first, we found it quite challenging. We didn’t think that the style she had in mind was compatible with the style of that furniture. Nevertheless, we decided to make it work and started to play around with different furniture options, layouts and items that we thought would achieve the desired look.
This room makeover was super interesting. We had a strong design restriction. At the same time we were able to find a way to create a new story with it.
The before and after was impressive. It didn’t seem the same room, even though we were using some strong items from the previous design and we stick to the previous colour scheme.
Going into details, the biggest concern with the bookshelves was that although they looked the same on form and style, they were different sizes. One was wider but also, one was slightly deeper than the other. This limited the option as we couldn’t place them together if we wanted to create a neat look.
After different options and ideas, we decided to create an additional cabinet to unify both bookshelves. This cabinet consisted of one unit on top and one bellow to surround the TV area. The ideas was to create a link between the two bookshelves.
Therefore, we obtained the look of a single big TV unit and created consistency and clarity in the new design. We decided to create the additional units in white, to keep it as neutral as possible and also to increase the reflection of light on this room.
The layout of the room was pretty straightforward since the beginning. It was quite long and narrow, and this was perfect to create the cosy and warm look the client was looking for.
The focal point of the room was the newly modify bookshelves. It was strong and had personality so we wanted to find beautiful furniture to go with it. We needed to keep it simple and to not overdo it. We wanted to create the feeling of connection between all the elements on this room.
A large sofa and an armchair gain prominence at the same time that perfectly fit the room. The colour palette was determined by the blue colour of the bookshelves. Earthy tones, mixed with black elements complete the colour scheme, making it rich and simple at the same time.
With this room makeover, we learned that it can be a good idea to reutilise your existing furniture, even in the situations where the design is not clear from the beginning.
If a piece of furniture has meaning to you, or you just want to save some money reutilising it, we definitely can make it work. The only thing needed is a good understanding of the space, superb eye for the style, and the creation of harmony between all the elements of the design.
